We’re very proud to announce that our entry in this year’s Blade Show and International Cutlery Fair was voted Accessory of the Year! We entered the prototype of our new Pro-Pack II sharpener. It’s built on the same platform as the Gen II sharpener, so anyone wishing to upgrade an existing system will be able to. Some of the exciting new features are:

  • New Ball Joints
  • Micro Angle Adjustments of +/- .05 Degrees
  • Vise Jaw Riser allowing for angles as low as 13 degrees (and lower depending on the width of the knife)
  • Inclinometer by iGaging
  • The new Micro Fine 1.4 Micron and .6 Micron Ceramic Stones Pack

Diamond Stones Are Almost Here

We  received confirmation today that the diamond stones needed to complete Sharpener Basic Kits and Pro Pack I’s are loaded and trucking from Los Angeles to Santa Fe. Fall is without a doubt the favorite season in Santa Fe. We had an exceptionally hot summer and are expecting a wet, early winter, but for now the cooler air and rain is very welcome. We’re enjoying a bumper crop of piñon nuts, which grow on the Piñon Pine Trees all along the highways and up into the foothills. People are pulled over on the sides of the roads, busy harvesting this local delicacy.  The annual Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque just wrapped up, we’re all stocking up on roasted green chile, and we’re getting ready for our busy season: the Holidays and the end of the year.

Here in the office we’ll be repeating our Pumpkin Carving adventure from last year. In 2014, we sharpened up some knives to varying grits and did some informal testing on which was the best pumpkin carver. Last year we all agreed that the knives with toothier edges, such as the 100-600, were the best for the job, possibly because the toothy edge helped to saw through the pumpkin’s thick shell. We’ll post this year’s pictures on Facebook along with our findings.

Gen 3 Low Angle Adapter

We now have a Gen 3 version of the Low Angle Adapter available after several of our Gen 3 customers notified us that their old Low Angle Adapter wasn’t fitting their new, wider Gen 3 Vise Jaw. So, we collaborated with our manufacturer in Vermont and we now have a Low Angle Adapter made especially to fit the Gen 3. Like the older model, it is $75.00 and fits all our current vises, including both Pro Packs and the Field and Sports series. There isn’t a separate product page for the new vise, so if you want to be sure you get the right adapter, just leave us a note when you order or contact us directly. We will continue to sell the old style Low Angle Adapter to customers without the Gen 3 Vise until we run out, at which point we will retire the old model and sell the Gen 3 adapter exclusively.

It’s been a busy summer for us here at Wicked Edge, but as August rolls around we’re tying off a lot of loose ends and getting ready for Fall. 

Production of the Generation 3 Pro sharpeners has been finalized and we’ve made several improvements, most of which were suggested to us by customers that purchased sharpeners from our first production run. All new sharpeners shipping out have these new features, such as a rubber ‘bumper’ along the top of the clear plastic window on the back of the sharpener and tightening screws to reduce play in the arms.  We’re also going to have the sharpeners powder coated for a brighter, more durable finish. We’re expecting the first group of Gen 3s in around 8/17 and another around 9/1. We’re working hard to get ready for these shipments so we can get backlogged orders out ASAP. 

Sharpness Testing Continues

We’re always looking for ways to expand the scientific study of sharpening. Lately, we’ve been testing razor blades sharpened to various grits and recording their sharpness. However, we wanted to go a step beyond that and see how continuous use effects knifes of different angles. We sharpened two Victorinox chef’s knives to 20 and 15 degrees, respectively. Both knives have a 1000 grit finish. We tested their initial sharpness and over the next three weeks we’ll be using both every day to cut up food and then we’ll be retesting their sharpness to see how it’s changed. Our previous research indicates that the wider 20 degree angle will have the more durable edge, but the 15 degree bevel will start sharper and may very end sharper. We’ll be posting results on the Wicked Edge Blog.

We have a great new product for those customers looking to go above and beyond in making their knives look great. We are now carrying Rusty’s Rags Knife Care Kit. The kit comes with a sheepskin pad, felt polishing cloth, and Rusty’s Rags Famous Knife Oil. We recommend using the Knife Care Kit after each sharpening to maintain a rust-free, highly polished knife.

It is summer again at last in Santa Fe! After a lot of late frosts and snows it’s warming up and everyone is gearing up for more outdoor activities. As far as the business goes, we’re having another busy month. The NRA Show was a great success and we had a wonderful time meeting new and old users of the Wicked Edge. We’re heading right back out again for our last show until November, so here’s a quick update on Blade Show 2015.

As always, we will be attending the Blade Show in Atlanta June 5-7 at the Cobb Galleria. We will have some of our most popular products for sale as well as a couple of Generation 3s to view in person. If you have a knife that needs sharpening or if you just want to chat, come by Booth #48.

Sous Chef Boot Camp

Clay recently travelled to British Columbia this past week to visit the new Cactus Club Café location in Kelowna. There he was able to take part in their Sous Chef Boot Camp and provide one-on-one training on the Wicked Edge. We are delighted to work with the Cactus Club Café and hope their employees love their new sharpener!
