From my understanding, it was never really a "rule" , though it had its share of followers.

Winny did have a certain way with words.

At a party Winston was well into his cups. Lady Astor was critical and said so.

"Winston you are drunk!"

Winston replied, " Madame you are ugly, but in the morning I will be sober."

Lady Astor said indignantly," Winston if you were my husband, I would poison your tea!"

Bertrand is one of my heroes, although my math skills stink, I at least could follow his philosophical stuff. Philosophy and Ancient History of the Middle East were my majors at university, so Bertrand for the one and Henri Frankfort for the other.
