I actually suggested doing a coarse, then a fine stone.

Seems a bit premature to be replacing stones (but I don't know how many knives you've done). Bob Nash happened to make a post related to this in another forum...

To give it some range though - I change out my 100/200 set that I travel with somewhere about after about 5 or 6 shows, so anywhere from about 200 to 350 knives - but I use them on 95%+ of the knives I do at shows. On those knives though they don't usually do super heavy work. Meaning I don't re-profile for folks at shows I just clean up, flatten and create an edge with them. When I change them out they are still cutting just really slowly. I do use 50/80s sometimes at shows but only on really bad stuff, or things with no edge created at all, or combat knives/survival knives/machetes and the like. Using the 50/80s for heavy work will preserve your 100s, but the trade off is you put in deeper scratches that are harder to polish out.

The rest of my diamonds, 400 to 1000 have never been changed out and they have done 3000+ knives probably.

Using them for just personal sharpening, you would use those coarse stones mainly just once per knife depending on its starting condition and how long you go between maintenance touch ups. if you stay on top of maintaining the edge after the first time you'll use mainly the finer diamonds or even just strops.

Perhaps a frame of reference for comparison? Maybe you've been using them longer than my impression.

We should have them in a couple of weeks. I have a couple combos in mind:

  1. DMT 3 Micron / Micro-Fine Fine
  2. DMT 3 Micron / Glass Blank with (also soon to be available) diamond PSA films. This combo is tremendous for ceramic blades.

I'd love to hear suggestions for other configurations.

What about a DMT/Leather combo?

I often use just one leather at the end for a quick strop, plus it would be a nice combo with less chance of cross contamination.

I think some of the issues are related to the browser you're using... if you're using IE, you can try running it in Compatibilty Mode, and see if it works like it should. (You'll know if you see an INSERT button after you add the file).

At this point, I'm waiting to see if the forum upgrade solves some of the problems.

I purchased the Wicked Edge sharpening system about 3 months ago (March 2013) and I cannot be more pleased with the performance and ease of use and the consistency of finish than I am. I am still on the learning curve but with practice plan to be more proficient than I am now. Thank you for an excellent product and service.

Sounds like you're having fun!

The first mezzaluna was used in the 18th century. It was invented by Silvio Pacitti in 1706 and was popularly known as the pizza cutter.

The Alaskan ULU (OO-loo) is an extremely versatile cutting tool crafted by the Native Alaskan people over five thousand years ago.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't have that particular knife, but here are a couple of pictures of a knife that is similar in design that you might try.

In the first example, I clamped a knife with a similar design that you describe. Instead of paper to help clamp, I use a thin piece of leather I cut from an old glove. Others use a piece of chamois, and Clay has reported success with moleskin. The leather example I show in the picture is holding the knife firmly.

An alternative in the second picture, is to clamp the blade near the heel, then adjust the approach to the tip by angling the knife. (I describe this a bit better in this thread.) In my case, I had to remove the thumbstud, but from pictures it doesn't look like you'll need to.

In either example, with this knife clamped I was able to reach 15 deg. per side without hitting the clamp. So perhaps try one of the above examples and see how it works.

I think I see what you're saying now... but since each side of the WE is set independent, I don't think you have to do anything special to clamp it... you'll just have to set each angle independently adjusting for the offset, just by matching what you now have on the knife?

If that's not it, just say so... someone will be along to help I'm sure.

I just find it amusing, cause I thought it would be a one sentence joke that wouldn't go anywhere... and now we have cowbell pictures.

Never know where a thread will go I suppose.

Probably won't be funny if Clay has to buy more server space... just for cowbells.

This knife is pretty sharp having con-vexed the the edges on a mouse pad with sand paper up to 3000 grit but when I get the WE (it has to come to Spain so it could be a while)will it be just a question of putting foam tape on the engraved side of the blade so that I can perhaps refine the edge further with the Chosera 5000-10000 .
The knife if anyone wishes to know is a full damascus Le Thiers Ebony made by Gilles Fontenille Pataud.

Nice knife!

I'm not sure I understand your question (at least the part about putting foam tape on the engraved side), so this may not be what you're looking for. You can create/maintain a convex edge on the WE by sharpening in "steps" usually one or two degrees, then smooth the bevels out with leather. So you could maintain what you have now with the leather strops on the WE.

Personally, if I wanted to use Choseras on the WE on that knife, I would just sharpen it with the Choseras, and maintain it that way. Think you would find it a hard to beat edge.

If you have a Photobucket account, once you upload your picture to Photobucket, you should be able to just click on the IMG link, it will automatically copy to your clipboard, then just paste the link into the post. Like this...

.

You'd click the "IMG" box in the above photo.

I'm the opposite I guess... I'll rarely grind one side specifically to raise a burr, regardless of whether or not I'm sharpening for time. Marking the edge usually tells me I've reached the edge. Doesn't mean I don't create one, I just don't specifically do it. Doesn't have anything to do with time saved.

But I often recommend it, and use it when needed.
