I caused a boo boo on my vise today which made me go back to the original set up? It is hard to believe how spoiled you become with the new arms? I just got the granite base in myself? It is really nice!!

And what's this Balsa strop I see?

I love my balsa strop. If I go lets just say? 400 through 1K diamonds, then 14/10 balsa to 5 leather (roo is really nice) when I take a hair and touch it to the blade it will "pop". Or if your looking to revive a edge the 14/10 balsa is also excellent!
Just start having fun you just won't believe it? Now if it isn't "wicked sharp" I'm disappointed!

i can sure tell you the lead business has been steadily picking up. i sell random weights of old lead fishing sinkers on ebay and last few weeks - god they have been selling like hot cakes in 10lb. lots.

my buddy tells me the bullet making guys are buying all the lead.
whoever - i like it......

We just had a lead retrieval company at the rang for the first time in thirty years. Going down four inch on the trap and skeet range the took out $150K worth of lead. There is plent more but they had to move on for a government contract that was time sensitive.

Clay,
Did you make a decision regarding a case for the stones? Is it possible to have one for the choseras? They are pretty expensive and I would love to protect them.
Thank you, Eamon

Welcome! Let us know when it arrives? If I were you I would use this time to go to some thrift store to find some deals on old knifes. That way you will have something to practice on when you get it. Your stones will need to break in so the first two knifes should be a couple you don't really love?

I've only loaded mine a few times. I very carefully squirt three small spots on the "roo". Basically dividing in three? It floats just long enough to use my finger to spread it evenly on the strop and all of a sudden it will just soak in. I have tried letting it sit for a day after applying and using after a few minutes after applying and I can not tell a difference?

I vote both chosera and strop. I'm not sure about diamonds? But will absolutely buy one for each paddle set.

are great IMHO. If I want great edge, I do progression 1000 diamonds -> micro coarse -> micro fine -> 1 balsa -> 0.5 balsa. It leaves quite shinny and hair whittling edges.

One HUGE caveat on the 50/80s. BREAK THEM IN on something you don't care about. My initial use left such deep scoring the lines took forever to remove. If you let newer 50/80s get too close to the edge you WILL chip the edge and it takes a long time to remove those chips. After they are worn in that's less of an issue but I still wouldn't try to completely reach the apex with them. Watch closely (with a loupe or whatever) and when the deepest scratchs get near the edge switch to the 100s.

Ken

My experience 100% Like Ken was there when it happened to me? And now that is the way I follow up using the 50/80s. I'm still working the 50s on knifes I don't care about.

I'd vote stones first... arms later. Sounds like you have a need for the stones, and would benefit more from them at this point.

Bob sold me everything on your list and a few more items. If he says so? I would listen to him. Better yet call him for some personal direction. His number is on the bottom of his thread

Welcome, Remember the first couple knifes should be the ones your not in love with till you get the small learning curve over. Then you will wonder how you lived without WEPS! Everyone on here is very willing to help so don't be shy. Have fun!

So here is my attempt to explain how I line up my angles. It works well for me.

1. Put angle cube on the heavy base in front of the blue metal base of the WEPS. Zero it.
2. Lay the angle cube it on its back flush against the lip of the blue base (It will read “error”) lay a stone against the angle cube. It will stick together due to the magnets. slide them so the tops are both flush against the lip of the blue base. (Now they are both laying flat on the big base and flush against the blue base.
3. Then put the stone/cube assembly on the rod.

Thank you for the recommendation. I never thought of lining it up on the base that way? I'm going to try and make a model of what I'm thinking of and post it. In the mean time I think I will use a standard square.
Thanks again!

Now this is just my opinion and with no offense to anyone! The knife has a really nice shine, But I don't think it is anything that could not be done with the ceramics?

Of course, no offense taken. Just curious though, have you tried going from the 800 chosera to the 1200/1600 ceramics and directly comparing the results using just the 1K Chosera? They do say that everyone has an opinion on most subjects. I tend to pay more attention to those opinions that are based on good experimental data.

Phil,
Very cool test! I never even thought of going chosera then ceramics? My test was based on 1k diamonds onto 12/16k ceramics. I will be looking for something fun to do today and will get back to you with my opinion?

Tom and Philip thanks for your input and recommendations. Also, thanks again to everywone for your time and recommendations. I ordered an 800/3000 and 5000/10000. I am sure I will like the results and if so, over time I can add additional combination of grits in the stones to fill the gaps.

Mark,
I'm sure you will be happy with your decision. A couple weeks ago I ran across a few knifes that the diamonds were to much for. They caused small chips along the edge? So I called Bob Nash to order a 600/800 combo. Bob strongly suggested to me that I go with 400/800. This was to offset what I already have? I have not listened to Bob in the past and it has cost me money! So I listened to Bob.
Last night after reading the thread I did a test? I started with my 400 and made a strong burr on both sides of the knife. I then cleaned up the knife with 120 strokes of the 800 and then 120 strokes of the 1000.
Now this is just my opinion and with no offense to anyone! The knife has a really nice shine, But I don't think it is anything that could not be done with the ceramics? I have to agree that the real shine happens after 1000. Now would the average guy with his edc be happy? Absolutely! Again with the but? It seems that you have the bug that we are talking about? I think you will be happy and as time and money come along add to the collection. I have already talked with Bob this morning and am getting the 10,K Just so I can see what everyone is talking about? I bought my collection ass backwards but who was to know I would jump off the deep end? Have fun!
