Sharpening something is the best way to go..
No question!!

The stones get broken in and you get something sharp.
Maybe one needs to work the blade a bit to remove the previous scratches.
Start with a utlity blade or 10...

I definitely agree. I had been having issues as my stones broke in and my results are SO much better just in 2 days and they continue to get better. this isn't just because of the stones breaking in but really working on my technique while breaking them in. i am incredibly impatient however i want the best from my knives, that's why i went with the wicked edge. take the time and do it right!

There is definitely no going back if you try to break in your diamond plates. Practice your technique first. Use a lighter touch on newer plates. I myself only ocassionally now use the 50/80 strictly for setting an initial angle on a new knife. Might only use a few strokes of the 100/200 on touch up problems then straight to ceramics stones the 400/600 and my go to stone is the 800 Chosera stone on up thru the grades. Like the feel and feed back of the Chosera stones. I use an extra wide version ( one inch wide ) and these do the job quickly.
